HOW TO GROW

Sowing: Direct sow Blue Lake 247 Bush Bean seeds outside at least 1 week after the last frost, since beans are quite sensitive to cold. They should be planted in rich, well drained soil with full sun exposure. If you have never planted beans in your garden before, treat the seeds with a powder inoculant to allow the process of nitrogen fixation to begin. Sow the seeds 1" deep and 3" apart, in rows 2'-3' apart, and press down the earth above them for good soil contact. These seeds rot easily in wet soil, so do not over water them. Germination should take place 7-12 days after planting. For companion planting benefits, plant Blue Lake Bush Bean seeds near carrots, cucumbers, or corn; avoid planting them near onions.

Growing: After germination, maintain soil moisture; beans have shallow roots, and need water at least once a week if the weather is dry. Mulching the plants helps conserve moisture and discourages weeds.

Harvesting: Expect your first beans about ten weeks after germination. Daily harvesting improves production; for best flavor and tenderness, pick the beans when they are no larger than a pencil in thickness, or from 4"-8" long. Serve or preserve the same day you harvested them for the freshest taste.

Seed Saving: Near the end of the growing season, allow the beans to dry completely on the vine; the pods will be light brown, and the seeds will rattle inside. Remove the seeds from the pods. After the Blue Lake 274 Bush Bean seeds are completely dry, store them in a cool, dry place for up to a year.

Flat beans

Just harvested these beans and they were all flat. Seem to be the wrong variety and more like Kentucky Wonder. Very disappointed I spent a whole growing season for the wrong variety.

Best germination

I always include a green bean patch in my spring/summer garden. There were years where I used southern states just bc that was the seed I had and it always came up with two seeds and produced like crazy. This year, I planted a variety of green bean seeds from different suppliers including southern states. I had purchased Everwilde after watching another large family who produced their food like I do, suggest them. I had to plant my other seeds THREE TIMES (after reading some gardening threads, I heard many people have similar issues). It blew my mind bc I've gardened for a long time- as a child with my parents and at least the past fifteen years of my adult life- and I couldn't believe I had to keep popping the competitors seeds in the trays. But Everwilde's seeds came up beautiful the first time, looked healthier and ended up being the best producers (I planted forty plants, picked twice I want to say I got seven gallons of beans- missed my last picking due to a hurricane). The best!

Awesome

These seeds were my third try at getting beans to come up this year. I am a lifelong gardener, and seeds from well-known and oft-used companies hardly came up. these are coming up wonderfully. I will be buying more from Everwilde.

DESCRIPTION

Blue Lake Bush Beans stand at the top of the list for gourmet cooks and gardeners alike because of their unsurpassed flavor and high yield. They are a favorite of home gardeners and highly recommended for canning. The heat-tolerant bushes grow about 18" tall and produce 5" to 6" pods with white seeds.
Named for the Blue Lake District near Ukiah, CA, where they first developed in 1961, these world famous beans set the standard for bush beans. The canning industry first widely used Blue Lake beans because of their excellence when canned, but they soon became known and loved all over the United States.
