The small flowers of this delicately scented white prairie clover form a wreath around the bottom of the bud, moving upward as the season progresses. The seeds fall a short distance from the plant when the wind shakes the elongated, cone-like heads, and are sometimes carried off by rodents for their food cache. Overall, this wildflower is high in protein, and readily eaten by herbivores. Deer, rabbits, and groundhogs, as well as livestock find this a nourishing and palatable plant. Native Americans also found it tasty, and used the roots for food and the leaves for tea.
