HOW TO GROW

Sowing: Gardeners with short growing seasons may want to start their squash seeds indoors a month before the last expected frost. Since squashes do not take well to transplanting, peat pots are the best option. Plant two seeds per pot, later clipping off the weaker seedling. Harden the seedlings by exposing them to the weather for several hours at a time during the week before transplanting. About a week after the last frost or when the soil temperature reaches an average of 60 degrees F, plant the seedlings in very rich soil 8-10' apart in rows 10-12' apart. Another option is to plant the seedlings in hills of two, 8-10' apart. To direct sow, plant pink banana jumbo winter squash seeds a week after frost 1/2" deep, 3-4' apart and thin to 8-10' apart. For companion planting benefits, plant squashes along with corn but avoid planting them with potatoes.

Growing: Since squash seedlings do not tolerate frost, provide protective coverings if cold weather threatens. Keep the soil moist at all times, but avoid getting the leaves wet as this can cause diseases such as rot or mildew. When the vines begin to develop, a layer of mulch will help conserve moisture and control weeds; mulch also will keep the squashes clean and protect them from too much soil contact. By midsummer, pinch off all the blooms to concentrate the plant's energy on the developing squashes.

Harvesting: Squashes can be harvested as soon as the stem begins to dry and the skin becomes too hard to pierce with a fingernail. Because cold weather can damage squashes, they should be harvested before the first frost. Cut the stem with a sharp knife, leaving a 2-3" length." Do not carry the squash by the stem; if the stem breaks off, use it as soon as possible, since this causes the squash to deteriorate quickly. Cure the squashes in the sun or a dry location until the stem shrivels; do not wash the ones you intend to store.

Seed Saving: By the time the squash has been cured, these pink banana jumbo winter squash seeds are mature. Cut the squash open, remove the pulp and seeds, and rinse off the pulp. Put the mixture in a bowl of water to remove the remaining pulp; the good seeds will sink. Remove the good seeds and spread them out to dry for 2-3 weeks, stirring them at times to make sure they dry completely. Store pink banana jumbo winter squash seeds in a cool, dry place for up to 4 years.

Pink banana squash review

The packaging is stellar, I am impressed with the care you take to ensure the seeds are viable. The seeds themselves seemed as plump and fresh as the day they were harvested. I have them planted, and I'm anxiously awaiting their sprouting.

Look good

My seeds arrived quickly and in very nice packaging. It is too cold to plant, so I cannot comment on how well they grew or produced, but based on past experience I'm sure they'll be good procecers.

Great Winter Squash

This squash can be eaten while it is small like a summer squash, or it can be allowed to grow to full size for a winter squash. One winter squash easily grows to 50 pounds or more. This delicious squash makes great pumpkin pie.

New very happy customer

I was looking for non hybrid pink banana squash. I have grown this in the past and loved this unique squash. I forgot to save some of these seeds and ran out. When searching for them I couldn't find them anywhere only the hybrid jumbo were to be found. They grow fine and large but I wanted the original non hybrid. I searched again this year and to my joy found the non hybrid at Everwilde Farms. In my searching they were the only source. When looking over their web site and seeing their selection and read the story of their history I decided to buy all my seeds from them this year. It was very easy and quick delivery. Everything arrived as I ordered. Looking forward to this years crop and most of all I have the one squash that has been missing from our table for many years. Thank you Everwlide Farms May God continue to bless you. All good things are from Him.

DESCRIPTION

The Pink Banana squash is a great winter keeper! This popular jumbo squash can reach 48" in length and weigh up to 70 pounds! It is used for both canning and baking and is not stringy when picked when less than 30" long. The thin, brittle skin turns pink-orange at maturity, which is about 110 days.
Originally, banana squash comes from South America. Archaelogists have found evidence of banana squashes such as Pink Banana in Peru, having grown there from centuries past. R. H. Shumway introduced the first type of banana squash to Americans in 1893, offering it for sale in his seed catalog. Soon it became quite popular, and grew in many 19th century American gardens.
