One of the most commonly used grasses in prairie restorations, this native perennial forms an arching foliage mound with fine-textured, hair-like leaves. Medium-green leaves are not only beautiful in summer, but the Fall and Winter colors ranging from golden orange to bronze create stunning winter interest and variety. Showy pink flowers rise well above the foliage clumps in late summer, and are most noted for their unique fragrance. Some claim it smells like fresh popcorn, coriander, cilantro, or sunflower seeds. No matter what the smell, several species of birds find the grainy seeds a tasty and edible treat.
