Wildflower Journal for Spring 2009

    Barn
April 10, 2009 - There is finally a little bit of Spring in the air! Temperatures are getting into the 50's for the first time, and nearly all the snow has melted.  There is still frost in the ground though, so that makes digging plants difficult.

The greenhouse is doing well, with about 60,000 little seedlings starting to come up.  Some of the first ones up were the Bidens.  Being an annual, I guess that it is only right for them to be fast growers.  Right behind them were the Round-headed Bush Clover (Lespedeza capitata) and some of the Sedges (Carex).  We are also seeing a lot of Wild Timothy (Muhlenbergia racemosa).  It is kind of hard to believe that all these little plants will be out in the fields two months from now!

It has been a very busy time for us with all the orders that come in.  We enjoy getting orders from all over the world.  Lately, we have shipped to countries like South Korea, Philippines, Sweden, France, South Africa, Russia, etc. Thanks for all of your interest and business!!

Barn   April 2, 2009 - The weatherman was right, and we got some snow this week.  It always seems like the 1st day of April is a favorite for late winter storms!  We only got an inch or two that stuck around for most of a day, and made everything look like winter again.
A few little wildflower plants are starting to show in the greenhouse!  Most wildflowers take a few weeks to germinate, but some only take a week or less.  This week, we saw some Royal Catchfly (Silene regia), Round-headed Bush Clover (Lespedeza capitata) and some Plains Oval Sedge (Carex brevior) starting to pop.
We are seeing more and more orders coming in, as it slowly begins to warm up.  We are always interested to see what people are doing in their plantings; and enjoy meeting (via E-mail), and  working with a wide cross-section of people.  People can be engineers, gardeners, police officers, college students, and still they all love wildflowers!  Thanks for your interest.

BONAP Maps   March 27, 2009 - The new wildflower website is nearly complete now, after a few months of the cold season went into updating a lot of things.  Just a few details to take care of on some of the front pages.  We added 200 new species to our offerings, and are excited to see that you all are as interested in our new species as we are.  The new maps are another big improvement, and many are finding them to be interesting.
Things have been very busy in the seed room as well.  We now have loads of packets that are ready to go out the door.  Despite the "down" economy, people still seem to be very interested in our wildflower seeds.
The weather is slow to warm up this year, but the robins are back, and sing the song of spring.  There is still snow here and there, with more coming according to the weatherman.  Nonetheless, we have started our new plants in the Greenhouse, and are looking for the first green sprouts to show up.
