HOW TO GROW

Sowing: Direct sow either in late fall or early spring. Plant the Elymus Canadensis seed just below the surface of the soil, compacting the soil very firmly. For spring planting, mix the Canada wild rye grass seeds with moist sand and store in the refrigerator for 60 days before planting. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination, since this seed cannot germinate in dry soil.

Growing: Water seedlings occasionally until they become established. Mature plants adapt to nearly any kind of soil including sand, gravel, and clay; they also tolerate drought and poor soil well. This plant readily reseeds itself and can grow very quickly in good conditions. It makes an excellent choice for providing forage and cover for birds and other wildlife.

Seed Saving: At the end of the season, the seed heads will begin to turn dry and light tan in color. Cut the seed heads from the stem and spread them out to dry completely. Thresh them to separate the seed from the stems. Store Canada wild rye grass seeds in a cool, dry place.

Love it, likes to grow as suggested. Will grow in partial shade. Does not reach full potential, but that's ok. 2-3 ft tall. Mixed with clover

I have not been able to plant yet so I can't speak on the seed viability but the seeds did come quickly and safely! I'm eager to use them this spring!

Great job!

My seeds came in a couple of days through the post office. Everything was perfect about the seeds, I did my own research about when to plant them and found out that planting them in the early fall was best for my area instead of what the package said. The package said to plant them in the spring is which most people should do. The package was resealable so I can save the left over seeds for the spring if the seeds do not grow. Can't wait to see the grass grow!

DESCRIPTION

Not to be confused with agricultural rye, this cool-season native grass is one of the most popular species for native plantings. It is easy to grow, it adapts to a wide variety of soils, it is winter hardy, and it is affordable - what more could you want in a grass?
This beautiful native plant gets its name from a resemblance to true rye, though it belongs to a different genus. Its preference for cool weather and winter-hardy growth make it unusual among native species. It flourishes in nearly any location, though it most commonly grows in open fields and prairies. It makes an excellent choice for prairie restoration.
