HOW TO GROW

Sowing: Direct sow seeds oustide at least 1 week after the last frost, since beans are quite sensitive to cold. They should be planted in rich, well drained soil with full sun exposure. If you have never planted beans in your garden before, treat the seeds with a powder inoculant to allow the process of nitrogen fixation to begin. Sow the seeds 1" deep and 3" apart, in rows 2'-3' apart, and press down the earth above them for good soil contact. These seeds rot easily in wet soil, so do not over water them. Germination should take place 7-12 days after planting. For companion planting benefits, plant bush beans near carrots, cucumbers, or corn; avoid planting them near onions.

Growing: After germination, maintain soil moisture; beans have shallow roots, and need water at least once a week if the weather is dry. Mulching the plants helps conserve moisture and discourages weeds.

Harvesting: Expect your first beans about ten weeks after germination. Daily harvesting improves production; for best flavor and tenderness, pick the beans when they are no larger than a pencil in thickness, or from 4-8" long. Serve or preserve the same day you harvested them for the freshest taste. When cooked, these beautiful purple beans will turn green.

Seed Saving: Near the end of the growing season, allow the beans to dry completely on the vine; the pods will be light brown, and the seeds will rattle inside. Remove the seeds from the pods. After the seeds are completely dry, store them in a cool, dry place for up to a year.

Magic in a pan

Last year I ordered the contender bean from you when I couldn't find them locally. Did great. But I tried this purple bean out last year, I was very pleased with them. Not only easy to see to pick but to watch them turn green when cooking was just magic in a pan.

Fabulous seed company and fast shipping, even now!

I've ordered seeds from Everwilde Farms many times in the past when I was a commercial market gardener growing for high end restaurants. Their seeds have always been vigorous and came in generous quantities. I also love their packaging; it's not only gorgeous but the foil packets really do keep the seeds longer. Now that I'm retired and need seeds for my home garden, Everwilde to the rescue! When everyone else has put their seed business on hold to catch up, Everwilde got my seeds to me in 3 days from the time of my order. AMAZING. I'm so grateful. I haven't planted this variety quite yet but I'm sure I'll have success based on my past experience with Everwilde Farrm seeds.

My favorite

I love these beans. We've been growing purple green beans for years. It was difficult to find locally this year (west coast) I found these. Love that they are organic, and the vault packaging looks promising for last keeping.
Although many of my beans were broken in half. Not sure if these are able to grow. I'll give it a try though.
I'll give another review once sprouted. It's been a week!

DESCRIPTION

This bean has an erect, vigorous plant that yields straight smooth purple pods that are about 5" long. The purple pods are easier to spot when picking, but then turn green when cooked. Germinates well in cool soil, and is resistant to bean beetles.
This stunning purple bean was bred by professor Elwyn Meader, a veteran plant expert from the University of New Hampshire. Throughout his career, Dr. Meader introduced over 60 varieties of vegetables, flowers, and fruits, from which he refused to profit financially because of his firm belief that his work belonged to the people. He stated that his wife inspired this particular variety by her idea that beans would be much easier to find if they were a different color than the leaves. This species was offered to the public by the Billy Hepler Seed Company in 1957.
