This desert gem flourishes in rugged landscapes with dry conditions, heat, and rocky, dry soil. The bright orange blooms attract a variety of bee species, including some specialist bees that can only pollinate Sphaeralcea and similar genera.
This tough little plant grows throughout the deserts of the American west and parts of Mexico. The tiny hairs on its leaves conserve moisture and reflect sunlight, as well as giving the foliage a characteristic grayish color. Desert creatures such as chuckwallas, bighorn sheep, and rabbits feed on the leaves of this plant. The genus name "Sphaeralcea" comes from the Latin words for "globe" and "mallow," references to the shape of the blossoms and to the plant family. FAST FACTS
